1984 Mercedes Benz 380 SL
Born in September of 1983 in Sindelfingin, Germany, she soon came across the pond and landed in Old Saybrook, CT. Painted in Light Ivory over a Brazil Brown leather interior, she wore a brown soft top and originally had a matching Ivory hardtop.
She had/has the regular options for a 107 series Mercedes. Power windows, Power right side mirror, Mexico Grand Prix radio, automatic power antenna, electric rear window defogger, auto climate control (Heat and AC) and cruise control.
As a 380 SL, she was powered by a 3.8L V8 that, due to US emission regulations, only pushed out 155 HP, but being a V8, she had some torque behind her and stepping hard on the skinny pedal still feels powerful.
After landing stateside, she was purchased quickly and remained on the CT shoreline. Just a few short years later, in 1987, she'd be purchased by Gino, as a present to his new wife for taking all the steps to get him into the states and to become a legal US citizen. They had met several years earlier when he was in the area on a business trip from Italy. His wife drove the car all over the coastline, generally only taking her out during the summer. However, she really must have enjoyed driving as she racked up some impressive miles. This car has 182,000 miles, but, because of Gino's penchant for regular service, locally at the same location, the car still runs and drives great. When Gino passed away, she sold the car to the current owner, several years ago. He's taken her out several times but not enough to justify keeping her as part of the collection, so it's been decided to find her a new home.
The leather seats have both seen better days and will need covers in the least and a full reupholstering to make them right again. The door cards are in very good shape and only two small cracks are on the dash. The carpets are faded, as is unfortunately typical with the Brazil brown interiors.
The AC doesn't work, but may only need a charge. All the power items work and the vacuum operated locks work correctly too.
The three speed automatic transmission shifts well and smoothly delivers the power to the IRS.
I'd say she's going to need tires.
The top was replaced sometime in the last few years.
There are a coupe of spots of rust on both front fenders/rockers and two small spots on the rear closing panels beneath the rear bumper. Despite these, there is no rust/rot in the floors, firewall or kick panels.
I'd simply clean up the small rust spots, put seat covers over the seats, get her some new shoes, do a cursory tune/fluid change/lube job and get her back on the road. There's plenty of time before summer hits and that's when you'll want her on the road in all her German V8 glory.
The price to get into this great beach/shoreline car is only $5000.
