1956 Studebaker President sedan.
Originally purchased in Nebraska, this car spent most of her life there, up into the mid 90's, being driven regularly based on some insurance cards and old oil receipts. It was sold off to a collector in California who purchased her mostly due to aesthetics. This collector had an oddball collection of cars and motorcycles that he rarely ever drove but did have the tendency to go out and look at, as he was an artist. He passed away recently and the current owner, known locally as the Step-father of Orphan Cars, purchased several cars from the collection. His work to this car was minimal, getting a tune up, oil change, BG treatment, brake lines and shoes and good cleaning.
In 56, the President was Studebaker's top of the line model and in two and 4 door versions, produced about 17,000 units, roughly 15,000 of those were the 4 door sedans.
This one is well optioned for any car of that day, but for Studebaker in particular. Aside from some rather unique styling features, this car came from the factory with power steering, the 289 V8 (which puts out about 210 HP and close to 300 lb ft of torque) power windows, a power front seat and a separate defrost set up. The heater core is set under the front seat so there is additional heat in the way of a "heated seat", aside from the standard forced hot air. All the lights work, wipers, power seat, windows, even the AM radio still brings in stations.
The interior is in very good condition for a car that is well over 60 years old. The seats are nearly perfect, having been protected under plastic for years, the door cards aren't bad and the padded dash is crack free. It does need to have the headliner replaced but a new one comes with the car.
The odometer shows 38,000 miles, it is felt that it has turned over, however, actual mileage is unknown. The car starts right up and runs very strong, under the hood is very quiet, no knocking or loud rocker tick. The 3 speed automatic (Flight-O-Matic) shifts correctly and moves the car along easily with the power from the 289 V8.
On the outside, the mostly original Sunglow Gold and Snowcap White still shines but show a good deal of flaws from small scratches to assorted small dents and a little bit of rust starting on the rear of each rocker. There is also evidence of some touch up paint. The frame and floor boards are super solid and only show some surface rust applicative to a car of this age. The exhaust should be a full dual set up, exiting out of the bumper cut outs, however, a previous owner had a single exhaust installed and the tail pipe is rusty.
Overall, this is a great running, solid, handsome car that can easily be taken out and enjoyed. You certainly won't see many if any out at your local cruise nights and cars shows. is she a show winner? No. Is she a survivor that will gather groups of admirers asking what she is? Definitely.
I see this car going to a family who are looking to get into the collector/classic car world on a small budget. They can easily find regular maintenance parts, there are numerous sources for Studebaker specific parts, they aren't expensive and it can easily be a rolling restoration if they'd like it to be.
This great entry level classic can be had for $9500.
